Why is my stovetop popped popcorn chewy?

I have just bought a Whirley pop popcorn popper and made my first batch of popcorn and it was rather chewy. I bought just original kernels. i added the oil and kernels and then put it on the stove and cranked away. Afterwards it turned out a little chewy.

A coworker said to possibly get the oil hot and then add the kernels. Would this help or does anyone have any other suggestions or better kernels to use instead of original.
