how do i get the majority of the popcorn kernels to pop in an air popper?

my air popper runs too high and browns the kernels, leaving 1/2 the kernels unpopped. this happens to me regardless of where i buy the popper or what brand popper i buy. the air popper we had in the 80s was great! these modern ones suck. has anyone successfully popped popcorn kernels in a modern popcorn air popper? how?
